On our fifth day of gratitude week, we will talk about how gratitude can help us cope and heal from our past difficult experiences. Gratitude gives us the power to cope with crisis and make us more resilient to stress. According to Robert Emmons, remembering our difficult past experiences and thinking about where we are at right now is one way to practice coping with gratitude. Using his exercise, think about a difficult event and answer the following questions:

  • How often do you think about this event?
  • What were some of the lessons you’ve learned from that difficult event?
  • Are there things you are thankful for what happened to you even though you were not during that difficult time?

The goal of this exercise is to help us gain new perspective on the difficult events we’ve experienced. For more information on how to cope with gratitude, visit https://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/how_gratitude_can_help_you_through_hard_times.
